about me

My name is Siyuan He and I go by Angel in the United States. I came to United States in fall 2017. I am from Shenzhen, China.  Shenzhen has become the Silicon Valley of China from a small fishing village in 40 years.

My journey with UC started in fall 2017. My previous University, Beijing Jiaotong University, is a partner university of UC. I always want to come to United States to study and experience a totally different culture. My previous Univeristy BJTU sent me to Cincinnati and I am enrolled in a double bachelor's degree program. I will obtain 2 degrees from both universities and I will have the opportunities to experience higher education in two different countries.

I am always very involved and active. A lot of you may have seen me somewhere on campus. I am a big fan of travelling and I really enjoy making friends from all over the world. I am a IPAL (International Partners and Leaders). IPALs is a student organization under the management of UC international. IPALs help UC international host different events and help international students get used to American life and American students understand different cultures and make friends with international students. I was a team leader of ICATs (International Bearcats), which I led a group of 12 people and help them understand the world more. I also joined Beta Alpha Psi, a business fraternity, and Beta Gamma Sigma, a honor society. I enjoy my time at UC. I have made so many friends from all over the world.

As I mentioned, I am a big fan of travelling. So far, I have been to North America, Europe, Asia and Middle East. I just came back from United Arab Emirates with a group of UC students in Middle East.

I joined UC honors program in spring 2019 when I was Co-oping for BDO to gain more experience in audit area. I am a scholarship receiver from UC Global scholarship, Int'l Outreach Award, LCB 2+2 international program and  Mary Rowe Book Award. Joining UC honors program gives me the opportunity to apply for more funds to help me reach my goals.

The most important thing I have learned at Lindner College of Business is the importance of networking and the power of connection. During the exploration of  the business world, I found connection to be the key to solve the business problem as well as the world's problem as a global citizen.

After graduation, I will be start my career at Deloitte. I plan to go back to school for  masters to further my  education. Currently, I am planning to combine my undergraduate accounting and business analytics background and my interest in finance and law in the future. I will seek possibilities in master of financial economics/ laws after I graduate.

College Reflection

My life at UC (2017 fall-2020 spring)

I can't believe I am graduating this may in 2020. It has been almost three years since I arrived in the United States. UC has given me everything I could ever asked for, education, professional development, opportunities, friendship and etc. There are countless ups and downs, achievements and failure, excitement and disappointment. It’s hard to summarize my undergraduate life here at UC for the past 3 years. But Coming to UC is one of the best choices I’ve ever made in my life, and I will say my time here did completely broaden my horizon and shaped my views for the world and my future. I will reflect my college life at UC from 4 different perspectives: Academics & Professional Development, Campus involvement, Community Engagement, travel and study abroad.

Academics& Professional Development

I am majoring Accounting and minoring in business analytics during my time here at UC. I have maintained 4.0 for my major GPA and 3.998 for my Cumulative GPA throughout my time here at UC. With that being said, I was on Dean’s list from my first to my last semester and UC and will be graduating with the highest honor summa cum laude and as distinguished University Honors from the Honors program. I am very proud of my hard work for the past 3 years and I am beyond grateful for all the professors, mentors, other faculty and friends who have helped me on my academics along the way.

I had three full-time Co-ops and three part-time Co-ops (including one on-campus internship) throughout my time here at UC. Coming to United States in 2017, I didn’t know the importance of practical development in the United States when it comes to job hunting because people pay more attention to our academics in my home country. Thus, starting from my first semester, I started to fully make use of the resources that UC provided us. UC was the origin of Cooperative Education, which emphasizes the importance of Co-ops a lot. With the help of the career coaches at Lindner College of Business, I found my first Co-op in the summer of 2018 and did another two Co-ops in spring and summer 2019. I was fortunate enough to get the return offer from Deloitte, which was my Co-op employer in summer 2019, so that I was able to secure a job before graduation with such a famous company. I also developed my professional skills by attending different networking events and joined business groups in our local community. I will say the most important thing I learned at UC and specially at Business College was professional development.

Campus Involvement

I have been highly involved on campus since day 1 at UC mainly because I wanted to make more friends and get adapt to a new culture and new environment more quickly. I have been teaching assistant for managerial accounting and business law for almost 2 years and was involved in 4 main student organizations on campus. In my first year at UC, I joined Beta Alpha Psi, an accounting honorary fraternity to develop my network in the industry and get more first-hand information from the employers. I also joined Icats, an American and international student organization based in business college focusing on obtain knowledge about different culture through cultural workshops. Icats is the first student organization that I was really involved with since I came to the States and where I made a lot of friends.

However, my favorite student organization, which I call them my family at Cincinnati, was IPALS. The IPALs are UC International’s student presence on campus. We are a student group consisting of international and domestic students at UC that assist the international student population with assimilation in America. Through events, workshops, and meet-ups, students have a chance to make new friends, learn about life at UC, and share our culture with one another. IPALs typically are interested in travel, meeting people from other countries, and learning about international issues from people who are different than them. My fellow IPALs are the most open-minded people I have ever seen in my life. They are open to new culture, new environment and new challenges. I feel extremely comfortable when I am around them and they always stand firm with me. These people are the people I truly call them friends and family here at University of Cincinnati.

I also joined UC PandaCATS in my last semester at UC as their e-board. PandaCATS is a new Chinese - American student organization that focuses on promoting Chinese culture on campus and encouraging diversity and inclusion. I was very lucky to have a group of friends to create and organize different events on campus. We are trying really hard to help the Chinese international students and domestic students to understand each other.

Community Engagement

At first, I participated in different community volunteering because UC was asking 30 community hours every academic year in order to maintain our scholarship. However, I developed my love for community service gradually when I helped people and gave back to the community. Although I have volunteered for many different organizations, I will simply talk about the 3 non-profit organizations that I have been involved with in the past 2-3 years.

United Way of Greater Cincinnati: I helped under-privileged people file personal income tax under the VITA program (Volunteer income tax assistant) in spring every year. I believe this was one of the most valuable experience in my college life because I was able to develop my customer service skills and I learned how to deal with different type of people under stress.

World Affairs council of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky: I am a global guide for World affairs council for the global classroom program. I have worked with hundreds of students ranging from elementary school to high school to create cultural awareness through presentations and activities. I also helped the one world gala every year for World affairs council’s fundraising. Volunteering as a global guide is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time. Those little kid’s smile and curiosity make everything worthy.

Midwest Chinese Chamber of Commerce: I started to help the Chinese Chamber of Commerce since the new year gala in 2018. As a volunteer for Midwest Chinese Chamber of Commerce, I am responsible for attending Chamber’s events of hosting incoming delegation from China, organizing different events for the Chamber such as monthly networking events, company visits and new year Gala. I was the microphone controller this year for the Annual New year gala. I will also be responsible for translating for incoming Chinese investors when they visit local business here in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Travel and Study abroad

Study Abroad in United Arab Emirates: I studied abroad to United Arab Emirates with a group of 20 students at Business college in January 2019. It was my first experience in the middle east, and it was definitely very eye-opening. I was able to learn so much about the UAE culture and their business environment.  I have an honor experience specifically talking about my experience in the United Arab Emirates.

Volunteer for “Doing Business in China” course: My life with UC actually started before I even came to the United States. Every summer, UC send out a group of 20 students and 2 faculty to visit 5-6 cities in China for 3 weeks as one of their study abroad experience. I was still a student of the partner university of UC, Beijing Jiaotong University back in 2017 summer. I volunteered for the study abroad group from UC in Beijing and ever since then, I volunteered for the study abroad group every summer. I made many friends every time I volunteered, and I was also able to visit lots of famous cultural sites in my home country with those UC students.

There are too many details to reflect on about my time at UC. I will always and forever be a be
