My 1st & 2nd year at UC

Fall 2017 is when I began my journey at the University of Cincinnati. I come from a double bachelor’s degree program of Beijing Jiaotong University, a partner university of UC. I completed my first two years at Beijing Jiaotong University and will finish my undergraduate study at UC.

My first year at UC was a big challenge for me. Coming to a new country, I struggled to adapt to the new life here quickly. I am a very long-term oriented person and I set up some long-term goals for my college life after coming to UC. US education is very different from Chinese education. Here, people do not only care about your GPA. If you have a 4.0 GPA and only know how to study, people usually will think of you as geek. Instead, they care about your campus involvement, leadership skills and giving back to the community. My short-term professional goal for my first year at UC is to find an internship for summer 2018. I believe I have done everything I could to get my first internship. I am very familiar with all the career coaches at the Lindner college of Business career service. I went to all the career fairs, information session and networking events. However, due to lack of experience, I only got one interview from a manufacturing company and did not get the offer.

2017

I reflected on myself and realized that I need to be more involved on campus and get more familiar with American culture. I joined Beta Alpha Psi and ICATs in fall 2017 and became very involved with them. Thanks to BAP, I was able to understand more about American corporate culture. My passion about culture leads me to becoming a team leader for ICATs later. In spring 2018, I accepted a position as teaching assistant for my managerial accounting professor and business law professor. Although none of them was paid, they were all very valuable professional experience. I got selected as an IPAL (International Partners and Leaders) in spring 2018. I have made so many friends in my first year at UC thanks to the different organizations that I joined. I also keep getting involved in the community. I became a volunteer income tax assistant in spring 2017 because I believe I can use what I have learned in class to help those people in need. I am also a long-term global guide for World Affairs council of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky because I enjoy sharing my culture and opinion with kids from different age groups.  I also helped the local Chinese chamber regularly. I am very surprised and happy that my network has expanded quite a lot and I, sometimes, can be a great resource for someone else. All the hard work led to two summer internship offers that gave me a chance to choose my first internship experience.

My second year at UC was less stressful but more fun. I got two ideal internship offers in the beginning of fall 2018 for the incoming spring and summer of 2019. I got selected into University Honors Program, kept volunteering for local chamber, World Affairs Council and local schools frequently and started to think about some of my travel dreams. I always wanted to travel to lots of different places and explore new things. Luckily, UC provided me with lots of great resources. I went on a study abroad trip to United Arab Emirates during winter 2018. I had learned so much about Middle East and my stereotypes about Middle East have changed a lot. I am also planning to explore Europe this fall and hopefully I will fulfill this goal.

I just finished a busy season spring Co-op at the world fifth-largest public accounting firm and I am currently interning at the world No.1 public accounting firm. My professional goal is to get a return offer and launch my career at my current company and my personal goal is travel to as many places as I can before graduation and having a much stronger body.
