UHP Problem Pitch Project

The vision of the University Honors Program is “Developing students into global citizen scholars who lead innovative efforts toward solving the world’s complex problems.” The gateway to UHP class asks us to pick a local complex problem and gain experience determining strategies to contribute toward finding possible solutions. Me, Lizzy Geraghty and Stephen Thomas formed a group based on our common interest, cultural diversity, and we learned pursuing our interests toward contributing toward solving problems.

Cultural awareness and representation on campus

Angel Siyuan He, Lizzy Geraghty, Stephen Thomas

Why we choose cultural awareness?

  • College is the first place for most individuals to get exposed to a quite significant cultural diversity that can often be enlightening and enriching

  • xenophobic tendencies in individuals not used to this melting pot of cultures and who lack cultural competency

  • importance of cultural diversity: tackle local and global issues; provide communication and new outlook to life;tackle personal biases and widespread stereotypes

Key Findings

  • Little collaboration and cooperation between different cultural organizations on campus

  • cultural organizations remain centers of cultural vacuum

  • we can't say cultural awareness in on a decline but geopolitical atmosphere is impacting the cultural awareness

Ways to improve cultural awareness on campus:

  1. creation of a governing body to serve as touch point for cultural organizations

  2. More events that share music, food and dance

  3. Introduction of more courses (diversity specific and study abroad) in UC Catalog

  4. partner with existing organizations such as International Partners and Leaders(IPALs)

Activity-College Student Experience

images of a college student's life

For my Gateway to University Honors class, I was asked to use 5 images to describe a common college students' experience. I wasn't from Cincinnati so I did not know a lot about the history here. I used 5 images of what I have seen for the past 1.5 year at UC and Cincinnati to describe the changes that Cincinnati has gone through.
