I worked at Learning Commons as a peer tutor in fall 2018. I provided personalized one-on-one instruction of algebra, calculus, accounting, business analytics and language courses to 50+ students and student athletes in order to encourage independent and active learning and help them achieve academic success. I learned to develop professionalism through attending training such as NCAA compliance, Diversity, Leadership, effective communication, Clery Act and Title IV and utilizing feedback from regular evaluations to improve the quality of tutoring. What's more, I collaborate with learning communities and professors and promote Learning Commons Service as a Program Ambassador by arranging and giving presentations for 40+ students.
My peer tutor experience was turned into an on-campus academic internship. I was able to develop my professionalism through the combination of theory and practice. I was asked to design a marketing flyer for Learning Commons as my final project of academic internship. The Learning Commons is one of the largest student employers on campus. Each year, they recruit new students to fill the roles. Based on my experience as a Learning Commons employee, I told prospect student employees why they should work for Learning Commons, how the employment will help them develop their professional goals and etc.
